Our Original Thesis
At CMT Digital, we have long believed that the expansion of digital assets into global financial infrastructure requires purpose-built systems for transparency, accountability, and trust. When we first invested in TRM Labs out of Fund III back in 2022, our thesis was that blockchain-native intelligence would become core infrastructure for institutions operating on public ledgers. As onchain activity scaled, the ability to understand and investigate that activity would be essential for both market participants and public institutions. We recently participated in TRM’s Series C as the company’s execution and expanding role in the ecosystem continued to reinforce that original conviction.
TRM stood out to us early for its focus on real-world outcomes rather than abstract analytics. The company was building tools designed for environments where accuracy, explainability, and reliability are critical, including regulated financial institutions and government agencies. This focus gave us conviction that TRM was building for long-term institutional adoption.
Leadership and Execution at Institutional Scale
We were impressed right away by the background and perspective of TRM’s founding team. TRM Labs was founded by Esteban Castaño and Rahul Raina, who shared a belief that digital assets would become a global mechanism for moving value and that this shift would require new intelligence infrastructure to support institutional use.
Both founders brought a strong technical orientation and a deep interest in national security and financial crime, which shaped TRM’s focus from the beginning. Rather than building solely for crypto-native users, the team concentrated on the second-order consequences of onchain adoption: the need to understand, investigate, and manage risk as activity scales across open networks.
As TRM matured, the company also built a leadership bench with significant public-sector, investigative, and commercial experience. This includes leaders such as Ari Redbord and Chris Janczewski, whose backgrounds span law enforcement, financial crime, and national security, helping ensure the platform is built for real-world investigative and compliance environments.
Equally important has been the depth of talent across the broader organization. TRM has assembled a team that combines technical excellence with strong conviction in the long-term role of blockchain in global financial infrastructure. We have seen this firsthand through leaders like Patrick South, TRM’s chief revenue officer, who initially introduced us to the opportunity and has been instrumental in scaling the company’s commercial footprint. Patrick’s effectiveness stems not just from execution, but from a deep belief in the blockchain ecosystem and in TRM’s role as a category-defining intelligence platform.
Since our initial investment, the leadership team has scaled the organization while maintaining product rigor and mission clarity. As TRM’s customer base expanded to include global financial institutions, regulators, and law enforcement agencies, the team navigated increasingly complex regulatory and operational requirements while continuing to deliver actionable intelligence to investigators, compliance professionals, and policymakers.
Product and Market Opportunity
TRM is building the intelligence layer that enables institutions to operate in an increasingly onchain economy. Its platform allows users to trace funds, identify risk, and investigate complex activity spanning wallets, entities, jurisdictions, and blockchains.
A core driver of TRM’s product leadership is its sustained investment in research and development. R&D represents the company’s largest area of investment, reflecting a deeply technical, product-first culture led by Esteban. This approach has allowed TRM’s existing products to remain consistently ahead of the market while supporting a rapid cadence of new product innovation. Rather than reacting to shifts in the ecosystem, TRM has demonstrated an ability to anticipate how institutional requirements evolve as onchain activity becomes more complex and higher stakes.
These capabilities have become increasingly important as illicit actors adopt automation, cross-chain strategies, and more sophisticated financial techniques. TRM’s platform plays a central role at the intersection of financial crime and national security, supporting investigations into ransomware, fraud, sanctions evasion, and other illicit activity that relies on digital asset rails.
Why We Increased Our Commitment
Since our initial investment, TRM has consistently validated our thesis through execution. The company has grown revenue at an average rate of more than 150 percent annually over the past five years and expanded its platform to support activity across more than 190 blockchains. Its customer base now includes major crypto platforms, global financial institutions, regulators, and law enforcement agencies.
As onchain activity has become more economically and geopolitically relevant, demand for sophisticated investigative and compliance tooling has grown in parallel. TRM has positioned itself at the center of that demand by delivering intelligence that institutions rely on in high-stakes environments.
The recently announced $70 million Series C round, which values TRM at $1 billion, represents a natural next phase for the platform. The capital is intended to expand TRM’s artificial intelligence capabilities across compliance, investigations, and risk detection, improving speed, precision, and scalability as volumes grow and threats evolve.
Looking Ahead
We believe TRM Labs occupies a critical position within the digital asset ecosystem as onchain activity continues to integrate with global financial and policy frameworks. Platforms that enable understanding and accountability at scale will play an outsized role in shaping how this technology matures.
Our continued partnership with TRM reflects conviction in the company’s leadership, execution, and long-term relevance. We are excited to support the team as they build the intelligence capabilities that will underpin the next phase of institutional adoption.
